Texas Tournaments are keeping the crowds on their toes. The 2023 Maverick Stampede Wrestling Tournament was held at Morton Ranch High School on December 1, 2023. It was a two-day tournament that had Varsity and JV wrestling matches. With about 40 teams in attendance, the $15 price of admission for a 2-day wristband was a bargain. We recently attended preseason nationals and the Maverick Stampede had the same energy on the floor.

All the wrestlers were on their game and many matches were close. The only thing that dragged the tournament down was when Trackwrestling crashed. At one point during an intense match with Senior, Clayton Kempworth of Foster High School and Sophomore, Max Herman of Cinco Ranch, Trackwrestling crashed again. If I recall correctly it was even 4-4 going into overtime. The crowds on both sides were on the very edge of the mats, watching with excitement. The match had to be done with paper and pencil and a cell phone stopwatch to keep time. The two energetic wrestlers scrambled relentlessly. Ultimately the ref gave the advantage to Clayton.

The next match that was the highlight match of the week was Landri Von Gonten of College Station A&M Consolidated. She dominated her bracket and proved herself the toughest Freshman at 132 vs. two-time state champ, Madi Canales, a senior at Foster High School. Landri dictated the match the entire time with an ending score of 10-1.

Another dominant match was from Senior Mateo Nikolov of Tompkins High School against Erick Moultry a Junior of Cypress Ranch. Mateo controlled the match the entire time ending at 9-0. He is making big moves this season!

The last wrestling match that is worth noting is between Caio Aron a junior from College Park and Ty Annoura a senior from Clear Creek. It was tied at the 3rd period 3-3 but in overtime, Caio caught Ty and took him down for the two points ending the match 5-3. Ty did a great job and fought with heart.
